Introduzione

This paper presents the main results of the 2023 research activities conducted in the framework of the research project on Mount Altesina and its district by scholars from the Ausonius Department of the University of Bordeaux-Montaigne in synergy with the Superintendency of Enna (2020-2023). The research project, which will continue for a further three years (2024-2027), has resulted in the survey of previously known structures and the identification of at least sixty prehistoric rock-cut tombs, an urban-type settlement datable between the 6th and 3rd centuries BCE, a Byzantine-Islamic fortification phase (6th -9th centuries) and a monastic occupation of the late medieval and early modern age (15th -17th centuries). This research is enabling the identification of the occupation across the millennia and the contextualisation of the site’s settlement dynamics in the broader regional and trans-regional context.
