Introduzione

The C.AR.EN. project aims to start the editing of the archaeological map of the province of Enna by using a GIS software that can contain and organise the data currently available for the complex settlement dynamics that, from prehistory to the Middle Ages, affected this inner part of Sicily. In this early phase, the archaeological map will be experimentally populated using the open data uploaded by the authors contributing to this volume. The project will then be developed by uploading other layers with data from archaeological research in the Erei upland. To implement this cartographic and archaeological project, it was decided to adopt the template released by the Central Institute for Archaeology (ICA) based on the GIS architecture employed by the open-source software QGIS. The template was designed to archive georeferenced data, with modules, libraries and dictionaries designed specifically for archaeological data. Furthermore, this application is the operational basis used by the new National Geoportal for Archaeology (GNA) released by the Ministry of Culture: the data that will be uploaded into the C.AR.EN. project in this version, as well as the subsequent updates, will be easily transferred to this platform when the Geoportal is also active in Sicily.
